Dirty tricks and devilment 2009-12-22 14:28:32 | Source THERE'S shocking, there's revolting - and then there's downright, stomach-turningly wrong. The Dirty Sanchez crew aim to bring you all of that, and so much more, in the big screen version of their cult "bad boy" TV series. Frequently dubbed the Welsh Jackass boyos - in as much as they tackle irresponsible and dangerous stunts, like their US counterparts, purely for the camera's pleasure - Dirty Sanchez comprise of four seemingly unhinged, yet fearless, individuals who snigger in the face of pain, reason and basic human intelligence. So far, fans have seen the boys rolling around in stinging nettles, playing naked paintball, lying on beds of drawing pins, drinking their own urine, challenging professional wrestlers and downing four litres of water, then denying themselves lavatory relief. Well, so far, so small fry. The film takes these brain-dead stunts to the next, indigestible level. And we mean that literally - some of the scenes in the movie are, indeed, hard to swallow, and might have you gagging into your popcorn. Like when Pancho undergoes a session of liposuction, without anaesthetic, and his cohorts are then dared to imbibe the resultant bottle of his extracted body fat. Still with us? As hand-over-mouth, fingers-over-eyes entertainment goes, Dirty Sanchez: The Movie wins hands down, destined to clean up as no-brainer, Friday-night multiplex fare you'll be talking about all weekend. So what's it all about, Pancho? Maybe he's the last person to ask. "You know when you're at school and you have your careers advisor asking what you want to do when you're older?" asks Pancho, aka Port Talbot-born Mike Locke, at 27 the youngest of the DS crew. "If I said I just wanted to be stood on the top of a high-rise hotel, with a load of white liquid in sight - and my mates are about to drink me - would anyone believe me?" Of course not. But he still agreed to have the liposuction, during the lads' visit to Thailand. "I didn't feel at ease until I came back home, and made sure that I didn't have hepatitis or anything," he reveals. "But that's probably my most vivid Dirty Sanchez memory of all. At the time it did the job, it's just I now have this weird oblong belly, because there's no fat at all on that side." Pancho, in truth, looks like a rather sweet guy who wouldn't harm your granny. He tends to be used as the eternal stooge by the rest of the gang, the butt of all their gags - that short man in The Benny Hill Show who always ended up being patted on the head. Only the humiliation goes a bit further with Pancho. For one thing, he has a habit of falling into a deep sleep while on tour with the boys - whether on or off the road - and he'll wake up, for example, with his nostrils super-glued together. Or with a bike lock clamped around his neck. "Of course, I forever pay if I fall asleep in front of these guys," he says, with an air of tired resignation. "And also suffering from narcolepsy, that doesn't help either, which is brought on by an excess of alcohol." He's actually a family man, with two very young daughters. So, has parenthood changed his attitude to attempting very worrying stunts? "It should sort my head out, eventually," he smiles. One of his partners-in-crime, Lee Dainton, 33, from Pontypool, is also a father, and a refreshingly responsible one by the sound of it. "I do try and shelter my kids from what we do," he says. "And at the end of the day, it's a personal laugh, it's not war we're doing here. We're strong environmentalists, we care about the planet, and I think my kids will grow up with a strong, balanced background." In was on the mean streets of Cardiff in 1992 that Pancho first met Dainton and Matt Pritchard - all of them keen skateboarders. Pancho had just given up rugby and football to devote more time to the extreme sport. Through competitions, they met Joycey - Londoner and sole non-Welsh member Dan Joyce - and the unholy alliance that would become Dirty Sanchez was spawned. The "plot" of their big-screen debut finds the DS boys all waking up in Hell after a particularly ambitious driving stunt goes horribly wrong. There, they meet the Devil (played by Howard Marks) who, having orchestrated their deaths, wants to check their credentials. So he sets them an ultimate challenge - if they want to come back to life, they must embark on a world tour committing one of the seven deadly sins in each location: Sloth in Wales, Anger in Russia, Lust in Bangkok, Gluttony in Mexico and so on. In Tokyo, under the banner of Pride, the boys opt for a Death Match pro Japanese-wrestling challenge against the Tokyo Shock Boys - Japan's equivalent to Dirty Sanchez. Times 10. "You should have seen their scars, all over their bodies," says Pritchard. "I mean, we've got some scars, but their backs were absolutely wrecked - they looked like they'd been self-harming for years." Pancho nods sagely, agreeing. "It was so intimidating going to see those wrestlers, because they had these huge baseball bats with nails in them - and we were next." So, nutters or nicely deranged boys? Who can tell? Are they the kind of people you'd want turning up at a party? Well, maybe yes The bizarre thing is, once you meet them, the Dirty Sanchez boys are actually extremely amiable, witty, even charming and - despite all evidence to the contrary - have a quite touching chemistry going on between them. Once you take away all the four-letter language and some misguided macho bravado, they're surprisingly moralistic and old-fashioned. "Just because we do it to ourselves, I wouldn't just go up to a random guy in the street and just start doing what we do to each other to that person, because it's our s***," explains Dainton. "It's what we find funny with each other. To just go out and do it to somebody you don't know, it's just not funny." Or, as Pritchard neatly sums up, "We're nice guys. But not to one another."
